Short Bio
Stella Norrby is an Irish artist, based in the enchanting landscapes of Innishowen, Donegal, Ireland. Her practice is predominately centred around the medium of sculpture, through which she explores themes of memory, identity, and the human experience through her connection to nature and the surrounding landscape. She studied fine art Sculpture and drawing at Winchester school of art, gaining a BA (Hons) degree. Worked in corporate management and events planning for several years. Gained a PGCE in Art and Design and worked in education for 10 years as Head of art and teacher of art and design in schools in Sweden, England and Ireland. For the past eight years she has solely focused on developing her studio practice, exploring and engaging with different mediums, materials and ideas, resulting in a large body of work in sculpture, mixed media and photography, "after having this time to work I now feel ready to show my work. I see this as the next stage, and a necessary development for myself and the progression of the work, through feedback and engagement with my peers".
Statement
"My training is in sculpture, my hands are tactile. Drawing is my heart "
I use both to explore my relationship to landscape, and my workings in it, feeling rooted in this land. Exploring the cellular and visceral sense of this deep connection.
I am interested in how the body moves and feels, in its strength and frailty and its deep knowing. In symbolism and archetypes. In visual language, listening and communication. I work with a very open approach sometimes with the excitement of a new idea, sometimes beginning by picking up materials that feel right in my hands, trusting the process of making. I use installation to bring together my created forms, seeing the connections and play between them always inspires me forward with more ideas.
